Frontiers in China is an English academic journal series supported by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). It is co-published by Higher Education Press (HEP) and Springer Publishing Company. Since its foundation in 2006, it has released 24 journals both in electronic and print versions, including 17 journals covering the fields of natural sciences, engineering technology, and life sciences, and 7 journals on the humanities and social sciences. This English academic journal series boasts of the widest coverage of subjects among its contributors in China. Its goal is to reflect the frontier academic progress of Chinese scholars, whether based locally or abroad, and establish a platform that can demonstrate the overall strength and comprehensive competence of Chinese academic research. In addition, the journal series aims to widen and increase the influence of Chinese academic circles in the world, and enhance the communication and exchanges between Chinese scholars and their international peers. The journal series follow three dictums: intensification, digitalization, and internationalization. With several years of development, an academic exchange platform that possesses strong international influence has begun to take shape, and it currently serves as an important force in making Chinese journals "come out" into the global arena.
Frontiers in China adheres to excellent academic content as its core principle. It intends to introduce the latest research results and present the frontier progress of each field, improve the influence of Chinese academic groups in the world. The members of the editorial board and review experts of the journal series are developing strategies to further enhance the journal series’ international competence by strictly following the peer review process while judging the quality of an article from an international perspective. Thus, the academic quality of the journal has been highly acknowledged. In fact, one of the journal series, Frontiers of computer science has been included as a core journal by the Ei Compendex database, while other journals have been indexed in Chemical Abstracts, Zentralblatt MATH, SCOPUS, EconLit, and other international indexing and abstracting systems.
The Frontiers in China journal series, with the help of the excellent digital management and publishing capacity of HEP, has independently developed its academic journal online publishing platform—the website of Frontiers in China (http://journal.hep.com.cn) and the "Frontiers in China Online Submission & Peer Review System" (http://journalsubmission.hep.com.cn). The former platform is a realization of the journal series' "online first publishing" policy and is accessible seamlessly via international third-party platforms. It provides digital publishing services for domestic journals, as well as online access for Chinese customers. Meanwhile, the latter platform plays a positive role in further widening the sources of article contributions at home and abroad and in improving the efficiency of submissions. At present, these two platforms, in conjunction with HEP's ERP system, form the working chain of the whole process from submission to publication.
To speed up the popularization of Frontiers in China journal series in colleges and universities in China and to attract more high quality manuscripts, as the Ministry of Education proposed, a cooperative relationship between HEP and the China Academic Library and Information System (CALIS) has been established. From the second half of 2008 onwards, HEP and CALIS would jointly launch digital data service. Users could also visit the journals of Frontiers in China via platform set up by CALIS. In addition, by cooperating with third-party data integration companies like Tsinghua Tongfang(CNKI), Wangfang Data, and others, their users can easily link with the Frontiers in China website to access the full text of the journals.
Along with the continuous improvement of Chinese scientific research competence, the Frontiers in China journal series will surely take the lead in the academic frontier in China.

IMechE (Institution of Mechanical Engineers)
The Institution of Mechanical Engineers is the fastest growing professional engineering institution in the UK. Our 100,000 members work at the heart of the country’s most important and dynamic industries.
With a 160-year heritage supporting us, today’s Institution is a forward-looking, campaigning organisation. By working with leading companies, universities and think tanks, we create and share knowledge to provide government, businesses and the public with fresh thinking and authoritative guidance on all aspects of mechanical engineering.
We truly believe we can improve the world through engineering. So the Institution finds and nurtures new talent, helping engineers build their careers and take on the challenges that, when solved, will make a difference to all of us.
In the UK, engineering has achieved great successes, but in a quiet way. We’re looking to shout about the achievements of our members and the industry, taking a positive, inspiring message into schools and out into the media. By being independent of both government and business, and avoiding strategic relationships with single-issue bodies or pressure groups, we can deliver genuinely impartial advice in a passionately committed manner.
As an Institution, we focus on five principal themes which affect and are affected by our engineers:
We promote sustainable energy use and engineering sustainable supply. We need to share knowledge, change the way we behave and drive advances in technology to reduce the strain on the world’s resources. We champion the development of more sustainable sources of energy which will also help reduce emissions.
We promote economic growth while adapting to the demands of climate change, global population growth and the depletion of natural resources. We need to minimise waste, pollution and our impact on the world around us. We must also adapt the way we do things to cope with the climate changes that are already underway.
We promote safe, efficient transport systems to ensure less congestion and emissions. To advance, travel must be made cleaner, safer and easier. That means creating a better understanding of global transport supply and demand, while keeping a sharp focus on the implications on carbon emissions.
Supporting product innovation, developing a nation’s economic growth and increasing global trade. Through campaigns to government such as Engineered in Britain, we show that a growing and thriving manufacturing sector will provide future economic growth, wealth and prosperity.
We inspire, prepare and support tomorrow’s engineers so we can respond to society’s challenges. Engineers will come up with the solutions that will make a brighter future for everyone. That’s why it’s so important that the industry not only prospers, but grows. We’re committed to inspiring the next generation of engineers who can rise to the challenge.
It’s no secret that there’s a real shortage of engineers. We go to great lengths to promote the profession at grass roots level, engaging with the next generation of mechanical engineers to build a brighter future for us all. Initiatives we own or are involved in to achieve this include:
- Formula Student
- Bloodhound
- Primary Engineer
- Smallpeice Trust
- Science Technology Engineering and Maths Ambassadors (STEM)
- Engineering Your Future events
Every year, we give Scholarships and Awards worth in excess of £400,000 to help nurture the UK’s engineering talent. The Institution’s Prizes and Awards Fund offers amounts ranging from £250 to £10,000. We celebrate the successes of the most inspirational students through the Vision Awards which take place in September.
Events and Training
The Institution is committed to providing the best possible service for its members, ensuring that they have the skills, knowledge, support and development advice they need at every stage of their career. Throughout the year, we organise a comprehensive series of events (technical conferences, seminars, workshops and social functions) which are designed by engineers for engineers. Our dedicated Learning and Development enables our members to navigate successfully through their initial professional registration, and then helps engineers to retain their competencies and keep their skills up to date through structured learning throughout their working lives.
Recognising Manufacturing Excellence
Mechanical engineering is at the heart of the UK manufacturing industry – the sixth largest in the world. With its Manufacturing Excellence business improvement programme, the Institution recognises and rewards manufacturing success in a wide range of categories, raising the profile, and ultimately the standards of British industry. Every entrant receives a customised benchmark report rating their performance against best practice and highlighting areas for improvement. Manufacturing Excellence showcases some of our finest talent, putting engineering to work in one of the world’s most competitive industries.
Our members and supporters make us who we are. Together we can improve the world through engineering.

Synthesis Digital Library of Engineering and Computer Science
SYNTHESIS is an innovative information service for the research, development and educational communities in engineering and computer science. It combines authoritative content with advanced digital delivery to create a product that is substantially more useful than traditional print and digital publications.
The basic component of the library is a 50- to 100-page electronic book that synthesizes an important research or development topic, authored by a prominent contributor to the field. We call these Lectures and believe that they offer unique value to the reader by providing more synthesis, analysis, and depth than typical research journal articles. They are also more modular and dynamic than traditional print or digital handbooks, such as collected volumes and monographs. We believe that they are ideal entry points to new areas for researchers, advanced developers, and students.
SYNTHESIS is organized by series, each managed by a prominent consulting editor. The series editor oversees lecture topic and author selection as well as peer review to assure quality. SYNTHESIS launched in October 2005 with an initial selection of series in engineering and computer science. New titles in each series will be posted to the site as they become available.
Additional series and titles will be added and revised as necessary. This constant influx makes the library dynamic in a way that has never been achieved with existing print or electronic products. Over time, SYNTHESIS will grow to encompass the entire scope of its subject disciplines. Our goal is to create one of the largest and most complete compilations of knowledge in engineering and computer science.
SYNTHESIS incorporates extensive reference linking both internally and externally. External linking using CrossRef and OpenURL standards provides instant access to linked sources from subscribed publishers.SYNTHESIS is indexed by Google as well as science and engineering indexing services.
SYNTHESIS is available by purchase or subscription to academic, corporate, and government institutions. Users at licensed institutions gain access by IP authentication.
Individual SYNTHESIS Lectures are available for purchase in print or via downloadable Adobe PDF.

As a historical dictionary, the OED is very different from those of current English, in which the focus is on present-day meanings. You’ll still find these in the OED, but you’ll also find the history of individual words, and of the language—traced through 3 million quotations, from classic literature and specialist periodicals to films scripts and cookery books.
The OED started life more than 150 years ago. Today, the dictionary is in the process of its first major revision. Updates revise and extend the OED at regular intervals, each time subtly adjusting our image of the English language.
